Strawberry Fall Harvest

We continue to be impressed with the quality and quantity of strawberries coming from our day-neutral low tunnel system.  As of October 3, we are still harvesting strawberries twice per week with no sign of slowing down in the near future.

With the cooler fall weather we’ve been having in the last few weeks, we have lowered the plastic sides on the low tunnel system.  This has helped to maintain a warmer temperature under the plastic hoops providing a more desirable environment for strawberry growth.  The lowered sides has also helped prevent our plants from getting excessive moisture on the plants and fruit.  (During the second half of September, our Morris site had over 4 inches of rain, which is 2 inches above average).   Too much water can cause soft fruit and an increase in disease.
