History of the Wool Mulch Strawberry Research

plant in woolResearch in the wool mulch and canola combination as a weed control strategy in strawberries began in 1998. At this time greenhouse trials were showing daughter plants would root through the wool mulch. In 1999 field trials confirmed this, producing numerous, vigorous daughter plants. The wool mulch virtually eliminated the need for herbicides and hand weeding.

Research completed in 2008 has shown this to be a very effective system for the reduction of weeds in strawberry fields, thus reducing labor, herbicide and fungicide applications. What’s more, the system produces high yields of large fruit one week earlier than traditionally-grown strawberries.
