Details

Production performance and disease resistance traits of strawberry cultivars are presented based on trials were planted in 2005 and 2007 at the University of Minnesota’s North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) in Grand Rapids (sandy loam soil), West Central Research and Outreach Center (WCROC) in Morris (loam soil), and Horticultural Research Center (HRC) near Excelsior (clay loam soil).

Plots are 15 feet long and replicated three times for each cultivar at WCROC and HRC and mulched with straw over the winter.   At NCROC, 3 replications of paired plots are planted for each cultivar and one of each pair is left unmulched over the winter to assess winter injury through stand loss.  All plots are mulched for the harvest season.  The trials are irrigated as needed and fertilized depending on the soil type and plant health.  They are sprayed with insecticides to control tarnished plant bug and may be sprayed with fungicides to control Botrytis if needed

Plots are harvested every 2 to 4 days and the yield and average berry weight are recorded at each harvest and summarized for the season.  The relative season, or earliness of a cultivar is estimated by the proportion of the total yield for that cultivar that is harvested in the first 1 to 4 harvests (first week to 10 days) of the season depending on length of season

Stand of each plot is recorded each fall and then again in the following spring to provide an estimate of winter injury and also to provide information on plant density that can be related to yield.

Vigor of plants in each plot is rated on a scale from 0 = dead to 9 = very vigorous.  Loss of vigor can be related to winter injury or damage from root rot diseases.

Disease severity is rated on a scale from 9 = no disease to 1 = severe disease when natural epidemics of root rots or leaf diseases occur.
