Day-neutral flower and runner removal

For our day-neutral strawberry project, we chose to remove flowers and runners early in the growing season, thus putting all of the plants growing energy into producing fruit.  We first removed flowers and cut runners in late May, again in early June and, finally in early July.  Timing of early July flower removal should provide us with ripe fruit in late-July/early-August.

By removing flowers and cutting runners, our goal is to grow vigorous plants with healthy root systems in order to sustain an adequate fruit crop.

Removing flowers

Remove flowers or buds by pinching off the stem.

Cutting runners

Using a scissors, cut runners as close to the strawberry crown as possible.
