The fruit breeding program at the University
of Minnesota has introduced many apple cultivars since Minnehaha
was introduced in 1920. Haralson followed in 1923.
Honeycrisp and Zestar!
are the most recent introductions.
Releases from other breeding programs, as well as chance seedlings
such as McIntosh also have a place in Minnesota
commercial orchards. Recommended apple varieties are those
that have performed well in University studies and in orchards
around the state.
Hardiness ratings refer to the Minnesota
Fruit Zones map.
