Origin: Mantet x Oriole, UM, 1977.
Harvest Period: Mid-August.
Fruit Characteristics: Medium size, striped red. Crisp, juicy, moderately tart.
Uses: Fresh eating, cooking.
Storage Life: August to early September.
Hardiness Zones: 4b, 4a, 3b
Tree Characteristics: Somewhat prone to biennial bearing.

 

 

Zestar!®

   Zestar!® (Minnewashta cultivar)

Origin: State Fair x MN 1691, UM, 1998.
Harvest Period: Late August to early September.
Fruit Characteristics: Medium to large, red stripe or blush. Flesh is light, crisp, and juicy. Outstanding well balanced flavor and crunchy texture, extraordinary in an early apple.
Uses: Fresh eating, cooking.
Storage Life: August to mid-October.
Hardiness Zones: 4b, 4a, 3b
Tree Characteristics: Vigorous, upright tree. Very susceptible to scab (similar to McIntosh and Cortland).

Fruit Characteristics: Medium size. Firm, juicy, sweet to tart.
Uses: Fresh eating, cooking.
Storage Life: August to late September.
Hardiness Zones: 4b, 4a
Tree Characteristics: Difficult to train; very susceptible to fireblight.

Origin: Introduced by Peter Gideon, Excelsior, MN, 1868; first Minnesota variety.
Harvest Period: Early September.
Fruit Characteristics: Medium size, striped red. Moderately tart.
Uses: Cooking, fresh eating, pie.
Storage Life: September to mid-October.
Hardiness Zones: 4b, 4a
Tree Characteristics: Quite susceptible to cedar-apple rust.
Production, Handling, and Marketing Issues: Subject to premature fruit drop. Particularly valued as a pie apple.
